New Trio Album on ECM to be released January 2011

Here is a long overdue update (and a heartfelt apology for my tardiness to english speaking readers...)

In March we recorded a new trio CD with the Julia Hülsmann Trio
Following the End of a Summer and Fasil (the latter with guitarist Marc Sinan), this will be the trio's third release on the Munich Label ECM.

We will have a week at Berlin's A-Trane Jazzclub from June 1st-5th, during which we feature the trio and guests Uli Kempendorff and Gerard Presencer as well as Johannes Enders.

After contributing some low end on Moritz von Oswald and Carl Craig's album recomposed for deutsche Grammophon, I had the pleasure of being a guest artist on the upcoming Moritz von Oswald trio release (featuring Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer).

The new album Short Stories (and longer tales...) by my own band Marc Muellbauer's Kaleidocope will be released in April 2011 on JazzHaus Records.

December 2009 saw the release on JAZZthing/Next Generation of Grow by Berlin Saxophonist Charlotte Greve's band Lisbeth Quartet (featuring Charlotte Greve: alto/ Manuel Schmiedel: piano/ Martin Krümling: drums/ Marc Muellbauer: bass) In the summer the band will be playing at Palatia Jazz and JazzBaltica, as well as some club gigs.

Also just released on the Cologne JazzHaus label: Louise by the Uli Kempendorff Quartet (Uli Kempendorff: cl, tenor/ Ronny Graupe: git/ Kay Lübke drums/ Marc Muellbauer: bass)

Currently Messrs Daniel Mattar, Christian Kögel Matthias Trippner an myself are working on the first album of Mattar4, Mattar's debut as singer songwriter. It is my first adventure into the world of home-recording, and a pleasant experience it is. The album will be mixed, treated electronically, chopped into bits and stuck together again by Venezian.

Hot off the press is December by Hannover guitarrist Klaus Spencker's Trio with Heinrich Köbberling on drums and myself on bass. It is released on the NRW-Records label A-Jazz.

Also hot off the press: City Shadows, the second album of Saxophonist FinnWiesner's trio also with Heinrich and myself.

Not quite off the press yet, but just recorded: an album with Guitarist Rüdiger Krause's take on John Lennons music. JL70

Febuary 2009 : release of Fasil on ECM

Following the October 2008 release of our Julia Hülsmann Trio CD "The End of a Summer" on ECM we are now happy to announce the release of "Fasil", the second recording of the trio for ECM, this time in collaboration with guitarist Marc Sinan who commissioned a song suite from Julia inspried by the life of Aisha, youngest wife of Mohammed. Julia's compositions for classically trained Sinan as featured soloist and singer Yelena Kuljiç, accompannied by the trio and Lena Thies on viola are connected and also inspired by group improvisations based on koranic verses originally chanted by an imam from the home town of Sinan's mother in Turkey.

Marc Sinan/Julia Hülsmann: "Fasil"

release date 27.02.09 (ECM)

Marc Sinan: nylon string guitar
Yelena Kuljiç: voice
Julia Hülsman: piano
Lena Thies: viola
Marc Muellbauer: bass
Heinrich Köbberling: drums

Press feedback - "The End of a Summer" - Julia Hülsmann Trio

Jazzmagazine, Disque d’émoi
Stereoplay, Jazz-CD des Monats

Listening to this purely instrumental album it is clear her love of well crafted verse spills into her music. Full of elegantly constructed melodies that seem natural extensions of the thematic material at hand, there is indeed a kind of musical poetry at work here which is absorbing as it is musically fulfilling.
Stuart Nicholson, Jazzwise

There’s a lot of brooding, featherlight touches and empty space, but Hülsmann has a magnetic, understated swing, too. Her longer improvisations manage to sound avant-boppish, even though they seem to develop by rippling outwards rather than advancing along a line. … Hülsmann is an interesting discovery with a subtle harmonic mind; Muellbauer and Köbberling are right on her wavelength.
John Fordham, The Guardian

There are a few things in the pipeline following the November 4th Berlin Jazzfest premiere of Julia Hülsmanns piece "Le Moustier" theme and variations for string quartet and piano trio, we will keep you posted.

Just out is "FAQ", the debut CD of the Dan-Robin Matthies Quartet featuring Ignaz Dinné, Tillman Person, and myself (out on phonector).

Coming up in May is the release of singer Esther Kaiser's new CD, which I'm very much looking forward to, not least as I wrote four string arrangements for the album, which I'm eager to hear. The Uli Kempendorrf Quartet has just released its debut CD out with it on Phonector featuring: Uli Kempendorff tenor sax and compositions, Ronny Graupe guitar, Marc Muellbauer bass, and Kay Lübke drums.

Last year also saw the recording of an ambitious sextet project by Victor Alcantara's Formaçion Alcantara , which we will release in June in Munich's Unterfahrt Jazzclub.
